Ridgeway, S. C. April 20, 1898
Col. Asbury Coward
S. C. M. A. Charleston, S. C.
My dear Colonel:
At this late hour will you please accept my sincere sympathy for you in the recent calamity that befell our alma mater.
The demeanor of the boys on that occasion was so unlike anything that we were accustomed to while there that it was hard for me to realize that it was at the Citadel, and that the person to whom the disrespect was shown was the same Superintendent that we took as a privilege to honor and obey.
If the Class of 1894 had been the First Class at this time that event would have been an impossibility.
We are trying to get up a company here now.
Yours very respectfully
