Headquarters Fifth U. S. Cavalry
Fort Sam Houston, Texas, April 28, 1898

My dear Colonel,
Well the war is on. I heard today that you were to be Colonel of the South Carolina Regiment. I need not tell you how glad I am. There is no one in the state or out of it better qualified and I know the Regiment will make a record now that South Carolinians will be proud of. I went to the [illegible] about a week ago offering my services; but was informed that my letter “was filed.” My Regiment is held here to look after the Mexican border. This I think is merely temporary until the Texas Cavalry can be mustered in & take our place. I was awfully sorry to see you had such trouble dear Colonel. You did all you could I know and I am glad the Board of Visitors had the sense to uphold you and

fire the whole crowd. I got a long letter from McDonald but have been ill & when I got up was too busy to write. Is he still with you or has he joined his Regiment? I don’t expect to be here long. If the Regiment doesn’t get orders, I think there is no doubt that Col. Carpenter will be made Brigadier General of Volunteers at once and I will go with him, so I am bound to be in it, though I should have liked a Regiment of South Carolinians. However, I didn’t expect it & am not disappointed. Indeed I am wholly rejoiced that you have it. I was afraid the [illegible] would give the Colonelcy to some fellow who knew nothing. Give my dearest love to all. I hope to be in camp with you soon. With much love dear Colonel

Affectionately yours
John M Jenkins
