Dear Launtie; -
I received your welcome letter, and also Walter’s. I worked like a hog on my room and again today in order to get a merit but failed, perchance just the opposite. I have not been to Aunt Lillie’s for some time but expect to dine there tomorrow. I had an invitation to go on a picnic today, but declined, as it is to [sic] much trouble, and ours is near at hand, I shall have all the picnic I wish there. Our Batallion [sic] was marched to the Academy of Music monday night in order to hear Mr. Bayard deliver an address to the Huguenot Society, it was two hours long but a fine thing, he is certainly “one of the finest orators in the U.S.” I wish that it had been so that Pa

could have heard him. I saw Miss Mattie Creighton on the streets today she is looking “prettier” than usual. Roberts is quite sick and in the Hospital. I forgot to make an application for leave last night and consequently could not go out anywhere, only sit and mope the whole night. As there is no news to tell I must close with much love for all and a kiss for Mack I am as always
Your loving Bro.
