Title

Oral History of Martha Lucía Gómez, interviewed by Marina López, 17 December, 2012

Description

Martha Gómez (1966) was born and lived in Bogotá, Colombia until she was sixteen when, due to a severe economic crisis, her family moved to the United States and settled in Miami, Florida. Gomez states that her parents, devout Catholics, raised their three children in the faith and taught them the importance of service to others. In the interview, Gomez says she had no problems adapting to the American culture for which she was attracted to as a child. She got married very young and then divorced. As a single mother with a boy and a girl, she set about working to provide for them. In 2005, encouraged by her brother who lived in Charleston, she decided to try her luck in South Carolina. She got a job at MUSC to work at the Northwoods pediatric clinic serving a mostly Spanish-speaking population. In the interview, Gómez explains her functions in the clinic as a translator, patient navigator, and parent educator. She states that the first and only support group for Spanish-speaking families with children with special needs meets monthly at the clinic. She reflects on the importance of implementing services that respond to the needs of the community, providing a place where families feel safe, and the consequences of immigration policies on the health of families. Finally, Gómez says that having achieved job stability and with her children now grown-up, she has been able to focus on her postponed dream: she has resumed her studies with the goal of graduating with a master degree in social work.
