Title
Oral History of Joseph Gerald Hilton, interviewed by Kieran Walsh Taylor, 7 July, 2017
Description
Joseph Gerald Hilton (b.1990) was born and raised in Red Top. He describes himself as "country" and talks about his life growing up in a small rural town in Charleston County. After graduating from West Ashley High, Hilton attended Benedict College until 2008 when, due to the economic recession, his parents lost their long-held jobs. Out of financial support, he dropped out of college and moved to downtown Charleston. He started working at Hayman’s and soon noticed the cultural differences between him and the city folks. In the interview, Hilton talks about his reasons to join the Fight for $15 campaign, a movement advocating for increasing the federal minimum wage and why he values organizing with other workers. He also reflects on the challenges he faces as a poor person despite working three jobs.
