Title

Oral History of Kellie Hendricks, interviewed by Kieran Walsh Taylor, 7 July, 2017

Description

Kellie Hendricks (b. 1983), a certified nursing assistant and full-time worker in hospitality, was born and raised in Charleston. Her father, an army veteran, worked in sanitation services and her mother worked at Anne’s, a women's apparel shop on King Street. They lived on Grimball Road in a rural area of James Island, which lacked basic public services such as electricity and running water. Looking for a better quality of life, the family moved to the City of North Charleston right before Hendricks started high school. At North Charleston High, Hendricks experienced a cultural shock. She remembers her peers commenting on her accent and noticing the differences in clothing and fashion styles. In the second part of the interview, Hendricks talks about the challenges she faces every day as a poor working person and explains why she joined other low-wage workers on the Fight for $15 campaign, a movement advocating for increasing the federal minimum wage.
