Dear Mother, Daddy, and Sandy,
I have been here a month today at 5:00 this afternoon. I still like it even though it is pretty rough. At first I went to sleep in class, I still do once in a while, but it is not as bad as it was at first.
I went to practice after I finished your letter Monday. I have been running a mile a day. I don’t feel it very much either. Monday night we had a joint meeting of all the YMCA groups. We had a guest speaker, Dr. Danner, a retired Methodist preacher from Georgetown, S.C.. He was a good speaker as Dr. Pierce Harris. He had preached at the Citadel way back in ‘24. He gave us one of those sermons he had used before at that time. He spoke on profanity, but not so many boys came. After the meetings
[Page 2]
we had ice cream and cookies. The only ice cream I have seen in Charleston is Swift’s Ice Cream. They serve it at the school. I can really gulp that down. Studied Monday night. Went to classes Tuesday morning. Got your letters that morning. Enjoyed the clippings. Ate dinner. Went to chemistry lab. I went to wrestling practice that afternoon. Studied that night. Got my coat Tuesday afternoon. Thanks.
This morning I got up and went to class as usual. We practiced in the stadium during drill (12-1) for the Furman Game. Ate dinner. Got a haircut, real short. Got your Tuesday’s letter with Itie’s letter enclosed. Went to history. Thanks for the $2. Went to practice. I had to
[Page 3]
quit practice early since choir practice begins earlier on Wednesday night. We eat before the others so we can have full ESP (Evening Study Period.)
I will write later about Thanksgiving when they tell us more. Fred Donham from Grady really doesn’t like this place so he says, but he seems to be doing all right. Lots of boys here from Atlanta. My rowing instructor at Bert Adams is a Captain here.
Sure I want you to come; you would certainly enjoy the visit. Don’t come until after October. We go into wools Oct. 28 and we look a lot better in them. Bring the camera if you come. (see back)
I guess that’s all.
Lots of love,
Jimmy (over)
