“Somewhere at Sea”
Dear Katherine:
Your most encouraging and, of course, very muchly appreciated letter was received just before I left Dillon. A pleasant surprise, I should say; for I thought you had forgotten me.
You’re doing your best young lady, at least
[Page 2]
in this instance you’ve certainly helped a soldier to meet responsibilities of doing his duty on the front.
As you notice, we’re at sea; have been out several days. And there’s a lot of facts, happenings, etc. that I would like to tell you, but we can’t, you know. Some-day when I come home and can see you, I’ll talk and talk. You’ll be married, but that won’t matter!
Really, I think I and all my pals are the luckiest
[Page 3]
fellows ever and we are all happy and proud that we are among the first of our troops to get to the front.
I suppose you’re getting along as well as usual with your farming and other industries. For I’ve always thought that you were about the smartest and most energetic; [illegible] in fact, (Pardon, moi, mademoiselle) an all around American girl you are.
Good-bye and good luck to you, Katherine, and best regards to all -
Sincerely,
John
