Mrs Elisa Coward

My Dear Friend

I am grieved to find that I have it not in my power to administer such consolation as I could wish, to the many mourners who have a claim on my advice, sympathy & prayers to a God of comfort. You too have been called upon to surrender your child into the arms of that Redeemer who when on earth took little children into his arms & kissed them & gave the assurance that of such is the kingdom of heaven. Mourn not for one that has this early been removed from the evil to come - from temptations, cares & earthly sorrows. Your loved one has gone to be reunited with the spirits of the little ones that had already been removed. How heavy & repeated have been the blows that have successively fallen on your house. First a young brother, talented, amiable & good. Then a sister who in moral worth, purity of character & piety of life had few equals & no superiors - to day I will be called on to commit to the grave the remains of Robert Blum who fell at Battery Wagner in defence of our rights & liberties & all we hold dear on earth. I am so immersed in [illegible] for our poor suffering soldiers that I have scarcely a moments time that is not occupied, yet I could not withhold this expression of my sympathy & condolence. Remember me affectionately to your Mother & all that are near to you.

Truly yr frd
John Bachman.
