July 4, 1943.
Dearest Lib.,
Well here it is July 4 and what am I doing. I’ll tell you, I’m just lounging around. This just isn’t my type of country. It sure is lonesome up here and do I miss you; We went down in Carlisle last night, and saw a spooky picture “I Walked with a Zombie.” They have a fairly nice theatre.
Suppose we will go Gettysburg Pa. this afternoon and tour the battlefield. This will be after lunch as these birds call it.
We went to the USO last night to see about an apartment. They didn’t have a single appartment [sic] left. Tell George that I’ll try again next week and also that it’s alright to stay out in town. The appartments [sic] rent for around $65 per month.
[Page 2]
Im don’t intend to make a messenger out of you, but just don’t see any use in writing him until I can find one.
I will write as often as I can, but from now on I’ll be busy. We, I understand, will have a test every day. Guess I’ll have to study for awhile anyway. The first part of the course will be easy, I hope, as I’ve already had it.
We visited the officers club last night. It is real nice.
Hope we will be able to be together soon
All my love
Manning.
