My Dear Sir: - The trouble in the Citadel is attracting a good deal of attention. I wish to assure you of my sincere sympathy in this, and at the same time, I can also state I have perfect confidence in your ability to manage the affair. I hope you will discipline those boys thoroughly. My pupils have eagerly read every word about this – and for this reason, I trust the News & Courier will give a column to your disposition of this trouble. It will teach the boys in the Citadel a lesson, as well as every pupil in the state, who knows of it.
Pardon me of my seeming officiousness – I only desire you to know you have my hearty sympathy and complete confidence.
Very truly yours,
J. W. Gaines
