I want to thank you again for your kindness to my son Cadet Cantey during the late “unpleasantness” at the Citadel, and for the appreciation you have shown in his effort to do his duty conscientiously. I will be further grateful to you if you will freely advise and instruct him as to his duties, feeling confident that it is his purpose to do the right as he sees it. Deeply regretting

the trouble you have had at the Citadel, and earnestly hoping that there is a brighter day ahead for the Institution. I remain –
