Robert Oswald Sams was in The Citadel's Class of 1861. He was assistant professor at The Arsenal Academy from April 1862 - May 1865. In this typescript dated December 1926, Sams describes the firing on the Star of the West, a ship that attempted to resupply Fort Sumter on January 9, 1861.
