Calliopean Literary Society Pin, 1886

This Calliopean Literary Society pin features a gold medal with the symbol of a book being pierced by a sword. Above are the initials "C. L. S." and the motto "Sapere Aude," which is Latin for "Dare to be wise." The medal is also inscribed with the dates 1845 (the founding date of the society) and 1883 (the date that the society was restarted when The Citadel reopened after the Civil War). The medal is suspended from a blank top bar. The pin belonged to Henry S. Hartzog, Class of 1886.
