Dear Ma;
I received your ever welcome letter day before yesterday, and, was glad to hear from home. It has been decided that we will have to go to Greenville for our encampment; will be in encampment 15 days, then some of the boys will receive their furloughs at Greenville, some at Columbia, and the remainder will come back here, and here be disbanded; therefore I will not be home as soon as I thought I would a few days ago. Tell Launtie that he must tell Dick Black

that I am I am very sorry that I was not able to see him a little longer than I did and that the next time that he comes down he must stop round and see me. I am sorry, but will have to call on you all for some more money as I will need a a coat and vest this summer, and also a little change to take along on the encampment with me, for there is no telling what may turn up. I have saved up enough to get a pair of paints, we will not be allowed to buy citizen’s clothes on our account this year as we did last year. As all of the boys are going to get their summer clothes next saturday, we will be able to get them at reduced

prices, - for it will be selling by the wholesale. I thought that if you could spare the money you may send mine next week so that I can get them at the same time it will be a great deal cheaper. I want to try and get some kind of a job during my holidays, and think of trying Major Gadsen, I am pretty certain that he will give me a place. I had the offer of a place already, but would have to go to Jacksonville, being afraid of the yellow fever declined it was too far from home also. The place was a very good one, taking “profiles” of different kinds of machinery.

About Cousin Campbell; he lost I am sorry to say, but, came very near getting it, - second best; I think he will get it next year, the only way that he lost was, because the gentleman who won had a son coming here who was in the hall at the time and courtesy compelled several fellows to vote for him.

I must now close with much love for all and self, and a kiss for Mack
