Dear Ma;
I received your ever welcome letter, with many thanks for what it contained: I know how hard times are, therefore I can appreciate what is sent me. Our competitions came off yesterday, and resulted in our company getting the prize, her average was 91.37 out of a possible 100, it was certainly something splendid. I do not know what is the matter with me, I find it impossible to put my mind on my books, I am falling behind hard in my studies, but it is not my fault, for I wish to study though

[Page 2]
I cannot, only hope I will soon be back at it as hard as ever. [Illegible] Connelly gave the corps a large barrel of lemonade yesterday, after the drill, it was nearly a hogshead, there is about a quarter of it still left and the boys have been drinking it ever sice since it was made. I think that I will see Aunt Lillie tomorrow; Uncle Alex is all right again[.] Has Aunt [Lovey] returned yet. We have on our linens now, it was quite a relief to change the stout grays, for the cool linens. I have had my measure taken for a pair of pants (citizens) at the $3.00 pants store, as I had to have a pair this sumer summer. They are real good for the price.

[Page 3]
I must now close, with love to all I remain your Affect. Love
Ossie

Kiss little Mack for me. Hope Pa’s trade is improving now
