Description
An account of the resource
George D. Mosho is a member of the Class of 1977. This collection contains letters written to Mosho from his father, George Mosho, throughout his time at The Citadel.
Mr. Mosho worked as a night shift janitor at Westinghouse Electric Corporation and while doing rounds each night, he would draw orthographic sketches of all the large machinery on the work floor, creating a catalog of all the machines housed in Westinghouse. Once seen by the engineering staff, the staff arranged for Mr. Mosho to attend night school to become an Industrial Engineer. When George let for The Citadel, Mr. Mosho wrote letters to him during lunch time, written on graph paper or stenographer tablet sheets, and as George responded with stories of the crazy happenings at The Citadel, including cockroaches that seemed to be everywhere, Mr. Mosho created a comic duo called "Salt and Pepper", who were cockroaches, and would often draw the two on letters sent to George.

Dear son,

We got your letter with the money orders in it last night. Your mother will make the deposits tomorrow.

So you had your fill of a desk job - now you must know how I feel about “pencil pushing” for a living. That’s the main reason I like to take time studies when ever [sic]I can, it gets me away from this desk.

For the past week our weather has been lousy - temperatures in the teens and below zero. The roads are just starting to get clear but still dangerous in alot [sic] of places and of course our Annual crop of pot-Holes [sic] are now starting to punch thru [sic] the best of our roads. Did you ever wonder what happens to the material that originaly [sic] was in the pot-Hole [sic]? I’m thinking of writing a story about dodging pot-holes, I’ll call it, “Close Encounters of the Route 30 King.”

Family news….David’s team beat ST. [sic] Agnes Red Team last night (47 to 16. They really wiped them off the boards. This is the team he used to play with. So he knew all of them, and Mr. Stock is their coach and he wanted to beat them pretty bad. David made the first basket and that’s all the points he got, but he played a hell of a defensive game. Blocking lay-ups, getting rebounds and his famous stealing the ball bit. Last Saturday he had 21 points in a game. He couldn’t do anything wrong that game.

Linda joined the “Y” in Wilmerding and I think she’s enrolled in a swimming program. We haven’t let her have the car much last month due to the bad roasts & weather. So like the rest of us, she’s suffering from “Cabin Fever.” Her and David get along like normal brother & sister and we have to pull them apart at times.

Your mother’s moral is low - due to the terrible roads she has to drive on lately. And of course “Cabin Fever” like the rest of us. Tomorrow night, we’re going to Aunt Kitties’ to play cards, that should cheer her up.

Nothing new with me - may go to a “Poker Game” on Saturday at Frank Boyer’s. Haven’t played for a couple of months and my luck should have changed for the better by now.

Well son, take care and have a safe trip home - see you soon.

Dear son,

We were glad to hear from you yesterday. The pictures are really good. The one, of everybody in the den, I thought was darn good considering the adverse conditions. Have to agree with you, the one with David and his beer cans is clever. Did you get a picture of him when he “dressed” like a guard? I didn’t realize that the captain was in the one picture until I read your letter. I can just picture you guys taking him like David did you and I at Christmas Holiday.

The cold weather I think has us all going “ape.” Tempers are sharp and David and Linda are always at it. Your mother and I dream of summer and peace and quiet again. Right now the weatherman has promised us a warm day with a high of 30 degrees. I just hope that I can wash the car this weekend, it looks like one of your B.V.’s as he leaves the swamp. By the way, how’s the B.V.’s coming along this year? What part have you been active in? Just checked my calendar and starting tomorrow, you’ll have just 90 days till graduation. It’s hard to believe it son. Your mother & I are very proud of you.

Right now I have to leave for section MB-2, as I’m working part time there. I’ll write more when I get back later. Also some guy is supposed to bring a Jap. Nambu in to show me. He wants to sell it and if it’s “right” I hope to get it. But after dealing

[Page 2]

With your Uncle Skinny and not getting that “1911” .45 I’m not too hot on any gun deals anymore. Maybe I’m getting too old to keep up with all the crap dealing with people to collect guns. When the fun is gone, it’s all work and I need more work like I need a hole in my head.

Back again for afew [sic] minutes then I’ll be off to call your Mother at work. There’s not much going on here with us. We’re still thinking of looking at that “70” Olds for a second car, but with 70,000 miles on it, I cna’t see his asking price. If it's in perfect shape I may just make a lower offer and wait him out. We sure need extra wheels here and more so when you come home in May. Have you any plans for your spring break yet? If we get it and you get home for the break, maybe you could take it back with you. Then we’d have two cars to carry you and your gear home after graduation.

Write as soon as you can son. Take care.

I know that he’ll be here for Thanksgiving, so you’ll get to see him then. Right after I’ve pick [sic] you up at the Airport next Wednesday, we’ll stop & get our hunting licenses.

Dear son,

Received your last letter yesterday - you kind of had us worried as we hadn’t heard much from you lately.

In answer to your requests, your mother is mailing your “Jump Badge” this morning at work. You should get it by Monday or Tuesday. And the money requested will have to wait til tomorrow as that’s pay day for your mother. We’ll send a postal money-order and should have it by Wednesday. That should enable you to repay the loan you made. Darn shame they didn’t pay you the proper amount, well chaulk that up as a lesson learned about the military and how easy they can foul up.

[Page 2]

Your camera sounds “tough.” No excuse for bad pictures now. I can’t wait to see it myself. As for myself, I’ll stick to movies, these new 35 mm cameras sound like you have to be a brain to use one. If Kodak would rebuild my old camera, I’d be happy with it. I got alot [sic] of good pictures with that camera and it saw alot [sic] of living in the field. Hope you enjoy yours as I did mine. Just remember, anything you can see, you can take a picture of it. How good a picture is up to your ability.

News from “Lion’s Field,” home of the St. Agnes’ Rams. Since Monday I have been helping coach the beginners (4th 5th & 6th grades). And I’ve found out how much I’m out of shape and how much football has changed in almost 30 yrs. You should have seen David tackle this big dude last night. I wished that I hadn’t been watching. He gave him a shoe-string tackle and the dude came down “like dead,” David got his “bell [illegible]” on that one. I talked to him at lunch time and he said he still has a headache. He’ll be alright, just more meanness than common sense in that guy. Linda is busy taking care of the house and sewing. Your mother and I are fine and busy as hell. Right now we’re looking forward to the picnic on Saturday and hoping for good weather.

Take care & write.

Dear son,

Everything is just about back to normal here in East Pittsburgh. Our union has agreed to a new 3 year contract and I’m back to work again.

How’s your training program coming along? Did you find out if you’ll be firing for qualification before you leave? Just about only four more weeks and you’ll be on your way home. The summer sure slips by so fast anymore.

It’s almost my lunch break and I’m starved. All I can think about is food. Last night I grilled “half” chickens on the outdoor grill and they were really good. The only trouble is I’m putting on some extra weight, if [sic] fact Linda said only last night that I was getting fat. It’ll be awhile before I let her have the car, for that statement of fact. David’s team lost another game and after-wards, I had my hands full keeping him from tearing apart some kids who made comments not to his liking. He’s a

[Page 2]

Perfect “red-ruck”. Your mother bought some clothes last night and as you well know new clothes always make a woman happy, which she is. Linda is still going to the Exercise Salon and says she is losing weight. Maybe that’s why she called me fat, she’s just showing off. And now David’s talking about the coming football season at St. Agnes.

And for me, I’m off to lunch, will write more. Back from lunch and feeling as good as anyone else what [illegible] ate lunch at “Papp’s Bar. Don’t feel like getting much work done today. Tamy’s on vacation and I’m just starting to construct a new formula with a time study taken last year. It’s all dog-work getting a formula started, so maybe it can wait til tomorrow.

Saw your Great-Uncle Skinny at the foreman’s picnic on Saturday. He’s decided not to sell his guns now. That’s the third time I believe he’s come to the same conclusion. Next time he mentions them to me, I’ll tell him I’ll help him take them to Esman’s and let them “screw him good. He’s sure an odd character.

Thanks for getting the Camera case at the P.X. I’ll pay you for it when you get home. If cassette blank tapes are cheap there, pick some up for me before you come home. I haven’t made any tapes since we got the stero [sic] back. Lately with all the lousey [sic] repeat T.V. programs, we listen to the stero [sic] quite often.

David’s last game is tonight and they’re playing the first place team. If they lose, holy hell will break out, with your brother right in the middle of it. I don’t know if I want to go or not.

Just thought of this, if you can pick up a copy of the Leatherneck magazine if they have them at the P.X. It’s been along [sic] time since I’ve read a recent copy of one.

Well I guess this is about all the dope I have for now son, so take care, stay out of sick bay and away from mean D.I’s and take care.

Your mother was disappointed that you didn’t call yesterday. Having had no letters last week I guess she

[Drawing of two insects climbing side of mountain with vulture looking at them, with the words “Take-’5’ and “Someday Pepper, we’ll laugh at all this”]

Wanted to hear from you on Sunday. This weekend was a real wash out. It rained all day Saturday and we had bad thunderstorms & high winds yesterday. So the Mosho’s didn’t do much, just caught up on some lost sleep. I cleaned the black power guns, which we find on the “fourth.” If it don’t rain

[Page 2]

Tonight, I might go over White Oak & do some .22 shooting. Talking of shooting, Chuck Kisk is down at Quantico at the range, maybe he’ll drop by to see you.

You made the home town paper one day last week. There was a picture of you (in whites) and an article on your promotion to 2nd Lt. in your company at the Citadel. Needless to say, we cut it out & are saving it for your scrapbook.

Everything is fine & back to normal with the Moshos. Linda has lost 8 lbs and working toward losing 12 more. David has a ball game tonight, I believe his team will finish 2nd place in their league again this year. Now of all things he wants to go to church every Sunday. You know why, in order to play football for St. Agnes he heard you have to not miss mass. Your mother is getting a nice sun tan. Last but not the least, Lady got a bath yesterday, “Right Guard” couldn’t help her anymore so I scrubbed her and had to take a bath myself when I was finished.

That’s it for now - take care, son.

Love,

Mom & Dad.
