Dear Wayne:
I've just received rv.D. orders assigning me to the 15th
Infantry at Lewis. I'm delighted with the detail, although
there are still some points to iron out administratively before
the orders become effective. Apparently my present tour would,
if handled according to accepted routine, be terminated next
March. The orders read about as follows: "Colonel Eisenhower's
foreign service tour is shortened to August provided all authorities in the Philippines concur. Otherwise tour shortened to
November".
I have a hunch that the Commonwealth officials are going
to ask for some postponement of effective date -- but I've
already told them that I consider myself lucky to get Ft. Lewis
and the 15th, and don't want to take chances.All in all I don't
know what to count on as yet -- but I should know in a few days.
While the powers-that-be are fi guring out that part of it,
I thought I'd get off some questions to you. To begin:
How about school for my son, who will be in his senior year
in high school next year'? I heard that the officers of the 15th .,,,...---= ·
have no quarters on the post. Is this true? I heard also that
a lot of construction is going on at Lewis. Does the program
include quarters for officers of 15th? If so, when will they
be completed'? How much longer are you due to be at Lewis? Is
it easy to bring uniforms tn that sector? (After four years in
the P.I. I do not own a presentable States unifqrm.) Has a Colonel
been assigned to the Regiment? Our last information is that Col.
McAndrew has gone, but we have heard nothing about a successor.
Give me any other dope you think I ought to have.
Please pay my respects to General Sweeney. He knows, without my saying it, that I'm looking forward with real pleasure to
service under him. I've met Fred Walker, and although he probably
won't remember me, give him friendly greetings from me when you
see him.
I'll deeply appreciate on a return airmail answer to my
questions, and promise to buy you a drink next fall, in payment
for the clipper stamp you'll have to put on the letter.

t hat my household goods, now stored at New Cumberland depot,
be sh i pped to Lewis, to arrive about December 1. I ' ve also
reques t ed the Fidel ity St orage Company, in ''lashington, D.C . ,
to make a private shipment, to arrive about the same t ime.
Both are t o be sent in care of Post ~uart ermaster, and I
wonder whether you ' ll ask him to keep you informed as to
their arrival, etc. The commercial sh i pment is to be prepaid,
by a friend in "ashington.
I saw W. D. orders the other day, deta iling Col.
't alker to the G.S., so of course, someone else will be the J
Commanding Officer of the · 15th. I had assumed that he was •
close to his f ull Colonelcy, and would probably be assigned
to command the regiment .
We have just two months more in the Philippines.
We ' re ge t ting to the po i nt we can hardly wait for De cember 1 3 .
If general Sweeney is still at Lewis, please pay

you ' d better come down to this sector for a day or so.
The re-classification business goes awfully slowly, but

on this club, ere long.
we're doing the best we can, and unless a hurricane
I wonder whether or not you can yet predict the probable
future station of the 104th Anti-tank Battalion -- now
assigned to one of the Anti-Tank Groups in Carolina. If,
at any time, it should become apparent to you that the
battalion will not come back to Fort Sam Houston, let me
know by radio. We need the barracks it used to occupy.
Orders were issued t o send you Po rter; also the Artillery
Officer was changed according to your request. I hope that
gang works out well!
The Second Division is giving me a guard of honor. I'm
completely overcome , particularly because of the cordiality
of the invitation, even after I demurred. I've always been
