It seems that quick notes is all I ever have time for. Mother and Dad came down to see me last Saturday afternoon. I sure was glad to see them. We had supper in the Hotel and after that I had to go back to school. Sunday, we rode around and had talked until dinner time. After we had finished a very wonderful meal Dad and I took a boat trip over to Ft. Sumter. Had a wonderful trip but don’t think that I want to go back because there is nothing to see.

Well I have just 38 more days and my college days are over for three to eighteen months. I am going to drop out this summer and if the army doesn’t get me I am going to spend the summer at home. I think tho [sic] that I will be inducted about the middle of July and wont [sic] be back here until 1948. During this time I hope to get in some of that travel, experie [sic] [illegible deletion] experience, good pay and food, and education fthat [sic] the army is offering. I am not ready to quit college and will not be ready until I get a sheepskin but think that a three months rest would do me worlds of good because I am getting to tired of studying as I am now.

Mother told me many nice things about Betty and her hubby. When are you going to get married and when am I going to get a girl friend is the topic of disscussion [sic] since all of our friends are settling down. Three or more of my class have married since I graduated and they were all nice people to. I was just kidding and hope that you stay single until you get that M A that you are planning to get.

Where are you living now and what goes on in Columbia? The only thing that you told me in Your last letter was for me to be a good boy on a date but I appreiated [sic] the good advice. Don’t you worry about me getting married or mixed up with a girl for a long time yet because I am not ready to sett [sic] settle down and will take the nessary [sic] precautions to keep me from settling down.

Write me more often [illegible deletion] as I only hear from the Osteen’s (Sumter Item) and Mother & Dad.

Love
Brother
</text>

I like everything down here but as in high school I still don’t like to study. I am carrying about 21 hrs. a week. Out of the six subjects I have I have had a test in every one except one.

I am supposed to be writing a “rat letter” for the upper classman who lives next door. If I can I am not going to write it. I long for the day when I can be an upper-classman. They seem to live such an easy life.

I’m glad you like your job. Please write me more about it. Did you get my card?

When you see mother tell her to send me something to eat. The mess hall is fine but a little food before taps sure is good. Tell her to be sure and mail it Saturday or Sunday so I won’t get pulled for having food in the room at Sat. morning inspection.

I have had a few leaves and been out to folly beach. It’s a pretty sorry beach but I like to go there because I

[Page 2]

Can get out of uniform and into a bathing suit. Charleston is one hole. I hope they have new pictures at the movies this week and as I have seen every one in them.

Sunday morning I went sailing. We sailed up down the Ashley and all over Charleston Harbor. I sure did enjoy seeing all of you all over in Orangeburg last Friday. Sorry that I did not get to see you all more but it looked like that there was something to do every minute of the time. Think that Sister looks fine and hope that she will like Greenville and stay healthy up there. Was glad to see Aunt Muriel but knew that she was going to cuss me out.

Just after you all left I went ritht [sic] back to the fair and immediately caught all the hoochie goochie…..then I found David and the boys and we went on a few rides. David and I went on one and stayed upside down the whole time. I twas really fun but did not last long enough. We all then went up town -- ate supper -- and got some dates and went to the dance. It was sure a swell dance. Saw a lot of my old friends. To top the day off we raised cain on the train coming back and I enjoyed the whole day except walking from the other side of King St. back here to the Citadel. The chicken was really swell and I made big friends with the conductor by giving hime [sic] some.

It was raining so Saturday Morning that we did not even hear the bugle. I’m not sorry tho [sic] because that extra hoursand [sic] a half sleep sure did feel good. After general leave was declared David and I went with Kenny Renken in the jeep out to his plantation fifty miles out of the combee River. It was an awful day and we did not get to do any hunting but I enjoyed getting out for the day. They sure have a nice home out there. The trip was really swell but the jeep was a little rough and used two quarts of oil.

Bobby, Louie, Jim Haynsworth, and Scott all bummed home last Saturday. I didn’t know that they were going but probaly [sic] wouldn’t have come home with them anyway because of the foul weather. Scott brought back his pick-up and invited me to go home with him on [illegible deletion] Sunday but I had some studying to do. I [illegible deletion] studied Sunday morning and then went to the Show that afternoon. Bobby and louie wnt [sic] along with David and I.

The hope is in about two weeks and then we come home for thanksgiving Furlough. Don’t think that I will have anyone down because theres no one I’m interested in at the time. Or as pop would put it -- theres no one interested in me. I am in Murray Barracks with all the new boys and have met many of them. I could not talk last week as a result of hollering at the new plebes to much. Classes, as far as I am concerned officially start-ed today. I am carrying 23 hours a week. Could not get in my Spanish but hope to get it in Next quarter. Have made arrangements to go ahead with third quarter Spanish next quarter --- that is if my other subjects do not interfere as they have for the past two quarters. I am taking one of my junior courses. It is the study of public finance. Other courses that I am taking this time are: my last quart of Economics, the last quarter of physics, the last quarter of my basic Military, and the last quarter of any English I will ever take (thank the Lord) if I pass this quarter, and a course in Business Psychology ---- it shows you how to cheat them right.

Right now they are holding an investigation because some boy named Bishop couldn’t take it and called up his folks. I think he was beat with the broom once and his parents came down here. He hasn’t left school yet but I8ll [sic] guarntee [sic] that it he doesn’t leave of his own free will the cadet corps will see to it that he is taken care of prop-erly [sic]. One of the boys in my class is involved -- I have my fingers crossed for him. I have done no hazing myself and never hope to do anything of the nature that will keep from a diploma from down here.

About next week end. I sure would like for you all to come down but think that it is more economical and better if you come the week end after. You remember you wrote me that you were coming down for the Furman Game. Well it is to be played Saturday week. I am looking for Dusty and his folks and you all at the Game. We all have to marchdown [sic] there but I think I can see you al over when we all out just after the Game is over.

[Page 2]

All the cadets have to stand up in there portion of the statidium [sic] until the game is over and then we can go wherever we choose. I will go over and get tickets if you want me to.

William and Mary beat Citadel so bad last week that I want even tell you about it. Pop, if you can I wish you would get a case of shells from Crosswell and Co. They are hard to buy and we don’t have any except a box of fours. I sure am looking forward to some good hunting next time I am home. Bobby is sure taking all the regulation down here fine and seems to be getting along very well. I see him nearly everyday and ask him how he is getting along. There are a good many boys from around sumter [sic] in this new Freshman class an dI am getting acquainted with all of them. I saw that Brown boy you told me about for the first time today.

Mother, Iam [sic] not making you my secretary or anything like that, but please bring me down my cover when you all come to the Furman game. It is getting mighty cold and I don’t have but one blanke-t. I am now rooming with Frank B. David from Dillion. He and I have a good time together but he is conscientious about his work and makes a good roomate [sic] to study with.

I am hoping to have enough credits and whatever else is required to be a junior at Christmas. Am going to talk with Col. Prouty and Col. Barnwell (about getting in advanced ROTC) some time this week. Wish you all would write me more often as I do not hear from anyone else.

Write me your plans……

Your devoted son,
Ashby Jr.
</text>

I think that all the strikes will soon be straightened out since Harry Truman got on the ball. He is a pretty good president but is just too slow. I hope that everything will be straightened out and that there will be plenty of cars when I get home. After last saturday at home I have definetly [sic] decided that the thing for me is to spend the summer at home.

I certainly did enjoy all of last Saturday with you all. I sure had a grand time. Tell sarah that the meals were swell and that I am looking forwar [sic] to eating many more of them this summer. John Danner gott us back here at 10:30 last Sat. night in plenty of time. He certainly is a nice fellow and I am sure he will be one of the best Pontiac owners. I heard from Ray the first of this week and I certainly am sorry that I missed him last Sat.

Pop, I got your letter just before the trains stopped running and certainly did enjoy hearing from you. I would have probly [sic] tried to come home yesterday but I had a little Job to do for the Col. The tour list came up last Thursday and my name - somehow - got on it. That was the little job I had to do for the Col. I had to walk six tours. I have finished four of them -- two Friday night and two yesterday afternoon. I will finish up net Wed. and I think that those will be the last tours that this little boy will ever walk at The Citadel.

I have not heard anything more about wheather [sic] Jimmy Byrnes is coming to commencent [sic] or not. Summerall went up to Washington about a week ago but I don’t know what for. Anyway ----- We are having a hop the night before commencent [sic] ---- that is Friday night the 14th. I expect to have my discharge the first thing the next morning and I want to come home immediately after graduation. Well what this all leads up to ----- Can I have a car for the hop? I have asked a girl down for the hop and she said that she would come. It is Alice Middleton. Scott has asked Dot down and they both could drive the car down if it would be all right with you all. Write me and let me know something soon. Thanks a lot.

Just three more weeks to go. A lot of boys are thinking about dropping out for the summer. I am going over to Col. Proutys office this week and find out just how I stand and when I will graduate by dropping out in the summer. I f [sic] youall [sic] see Bobby or any of them tell him to write and study hard.

Will write youwhen [sic] to write down here for my discharge.

Your devoted son,
Ashby
</text>

I am glad it didn’t come before it did because I couldn’t have gotten any studying done.

Last night when they announced peace everybody went wild with shouts. Then we had to stay in our rooms for awhile. The battleships on the Ashley were shooting flares, blaring horns and [illegible deletion] sirens and shiny shinning [sic] light that hit the clouds. We were supposed to stay in our rooms but everybody went out on the gallery and sat down. We wandered from room to room in full succession until tatoo [sic]. We had a company meeting then and our captain said we would get leave.

The only leave we got all today was to miss a class by going

[Page 2]

To Chapel. Chapel was over in about an hour so they let us have 50 minutes freedom. Our company commander then told us that General Sumerall [sic] was not going to declare a holiday until the Gov. of S.C. declared a legal holiday for the state.

It has been said on the campus that everybody is celebrating except Germany, Japan and The Citadel. There are numerous rumors about everything flying around so I can’t be too sure about anything.

I think I have found a garage, one of the boys thinks that he knows when one is about 3 blocks from here. I will find out more this week-in [sic] if we get out.

I have marked all my socks. I bought the overcoat for $22.00. I am going to have Mr. Bell to fix it next week.

[Typewritten on paper with letterhead “Cadet Ashby McElveen, The Citadel, Charleston, S.C.]

[Page 1]

Friday Aug. 17

Dear Folks,

Well here I sit and I could be there with you all. I believe I could have made it home and back with the rest but I have a lot to do around here.

Mom, Pop told me about you breaking your toe. I hope that it is nothing serious and I know that you will be all right soon. I wrote you all a letter the other night but never did m ail it. I will enclose it just to prove that I did write.

Col. McMurry told us to celebrate inwardly when the news of Japans [sic] Surrender came. That is exactly what we did. The news came at seven and every body nearly went wild. We settled down in about 10 minutes and study period went on as usual except nobody studied. Two boys signed out to the library and went Awol. They found there clothes and caught them coming in. As a result all cadets are not allowed to go to the library during ESP anymore. I dont think the boys are going to be kicked out but they may.

We attended classes as usual the next morning. I was supposed to have a math test but the prof called it off until Thur. We got out of the last two classes before dinner and went to chapel. They had a pretty good service but the best part of it was that we got out in about an hour and had 50 minutes off. After dinner things went as usual but every body was scared the the boys were going to terr [sic] the barracks down that night. Nothing happened so Gen. Summerall published an order giving us today off. We lose about three hours leave tomorrow tho [sic] because the Gov. is coming down.

I went over to have my voice recorded the other afternoon but the recorer [sic] broke just as I got ready to talk into the mike.

They have rented the other three barracks to the Navy because the Navy hasn’t got room out there. There will be 1500 of the boys in blue here before another week is up. They moved about 500 of them out here yesterday. They are eating in the mess hall but we are seprerated [sic] from them. I don’t know what they are going to do out here but I sure hope we don’t have any trouble with them.

[Page 2]

Yesterday afternoon Ray, T C Williams, And I, Mr. Goggans went out and ran the obstacle course. We had a big time. Mr. Goggans wrestled with us and beat us up. Then we went over to the swimming pool. Some of the other upper classmen in our company were there and we had a ducking fight between the upperclassmen vs. the plebes. You can guess who won.

We had a real good supper last night. We had pork chops. I ate three of them. After supper Ray and I loafed around awhile and then went up town to the picture show. We saw “On Stage Everybody” and it wasn’t any good.

Pop I certainly do appreciat [sic] you letting me use the station wagon. We are going to leave it at Jimmy’s aunt’s house until we can find a place close by. I think I know where there is a place that we can rent a garage about threeblocks [sic] from here.

this part of the letter is to that yankee cook of ours.

Well Cook,

Did you have a big time up the road? I hope you did because I have missed some of that fried chicken that you said you were going to send me this summer. I know that you have not gotton [sic] biggity like some of the colored folks do when they go up there. Please take care of Mom and Pop for me while I am away. I can study a lot better knowing that you will be there looking out for mom with her broke toe. Look out for Sister too. Tell all the colored folks hello for me. It is just four weeks before I will be home so you get in practice cooking again because I am really hungry for some of your cooking.

Be good and remember your promise to me.

Bub.

Well I have to take a shower now and get the mail so I will stop now..

love
son
</text>

Well to tell you the truth I was rather surprised myself. I guess you all knew that I knew -- but I did not know until last week-in [sic] when Ray and I were at the Beach. Ray told me that he owed it to you all to tell you before it was ann-ounced but they didn’t tell anyone until the last minute and then he didn’t have time to come to see you. I think Pop had strong suspecisons [sic]. Mother, will you please get me some kind of a wedding present and send it to Joye and Ray for me. -- I am not very good at this kind of thing and would appreciate itif [sic] you would get something nice for my best friend and his bride. Just think, he roomed with me for three months after he was married and never told me a thing about it.

-- Well enough of this Marriage bussiness [sic] --

We got back safely Wednesday afternoon and I settled down for another fiftty [sic] days. Ray left about dinner time the next day but we didn’t tell a soul down here until it was announced in the paper. I have done some studying but ave [sic] lots [illegible] it befor [sic] me tomorrow,. Physics and especially statistics are still giving me a great deal of trouble. I am going to battle them and hope I make out as the Allies did in this last war.

This morning instead of having inspection we had a review and the pitched tents. It was somthing [sic] different and that was all. After we were ready to move back into the barracks the Col. made a talk. He told us that we are going to be inspected by a group of army officers on the 17 of May. We are going to get out of classes that day and everything has to be in ship shape. That ought to be a pretty interesting day. I certainly hope that I don’t goof off.

The col. also told us that all of us boys rooming of the top gallery were going to have to move down on the quardrangl [sic]. I don’t mind moving to much but hope that I can continue to room by

[Page 2]

Myself. I think that I get more studying done when I room by myself but if I do have to room with somebody maybe it will help me.

I certainly did have a wonderful time at home this last furlough. Thanks a lot for all the wonderful meals. Tell cook that they were mighty good. I wish now that I had stayed home instead of going to the beach. That No. 208 N. Purdy St. is certainly a good place. It is the real HOME SWEET HOME.

Well there are just six more weeks of classes and then a week of exams and I will be home again. It is just seven weeks from today.

I have been to see [illegible deletion] two pictures shows this week-in [sic]. I went to see “Adventure” with Gable and Garson friday night. It is a swell show -- Mom see it when it comes to Sumter.

I have written Sis behging [sic] off for not seeing her last week-in [sic]. You all please write me soon as I do not hear from anyone else.

Your devoted son,
W. A.
