The letters from 1943-March 1945 are all from Manning to Elizabeth while the letters from March 1945-May 1945 are all from Elizabeth to Manning. These letters were sent to Manning after his death and as a result, were returned to Elizabeth. They came to The Citadel Archives still sealed, having never been opened and read.</text>

              <text>[Page 1]

July 3, 1943.

Dearest “Lib”

I have just about finished with all of [the] signing & “etc”, We had a very nice trip up here. With every mile I realized that I was getting that much further away from you. We arrived here around 3:30 PM yesterday after having spent the night in Culpepper [sic] Va. That sure is hilly country around this section.

Since arriving yesterday, we have been signing various forms. I finally go through with this around eleven o’clock today. We won’t have anything to do until monday. It sure will be lonesome until we get busy and probably after this also.

This is a small post but it is very nice and clean. Of course, I don’t like being up here with all these yankees and especially negroes. Most of the yankees, of course, are jews. Tell Beverely that Sam feels at home along with his brothers.

“over”

[Page 2]

Also tell Beverely to stick with Sam. I have talked with him and I think that he can be brough [sic] across. I will not be of much help; as my talking to him will do more harm than good. Beleive [sic] if she would act a little indifferent towards him, he would be more interested.

Just a quick glance around this place, it looks like we may have to work while we are here. Will have classes and also tests on the courses. Thought that I had finished with these.

Guess I’ll go into town, which is about a mile away, and see about that apartment for George. Has he gotten his orders yet. Will you ask Mims if he wants me to buy him a pair of tennis shoes up here? I can get a pair of shoes for $1.95.

Sure do miss you. Didn’t realize that I would miss you this much. Hope we can be together soon. It looks as if it will be several

[Page 3]

weeks before I can get settled down.

Will write again tomorrow.

Think that I had better write now while I have plenty of time.

I love you just as much as ever.

All my love
Manning (Boobie to you only

My address is
1st Lieut. These letters were sent to Manning after his death and as a result, were returned to Elizabeth. They came to The Citadel Archives still sealed, having never been opened and read.</text>

Dearest Lib.,

Well here it is July 4 and what am I doing. I’ll tell you, I’m just lounging around. This just isn’t my type of country. It sure is lonesome up here and do I miss you; We went down in Carlisle last night, and saw a spooky picture “I Walked with a Zombie.” They have a fairly nice theatre.

Suppose we will go Gettysburg Pa. this afternoon and tour the battlefield. This will be after lunch as these birds call it.

We went to the USO last night to see about an apartment. They didn’t have a single appartment [sic] left. Tell George that I’ll try again next week and also that it’s alright to stay out in town. The appartments [sic] rent for around $65 per month.

[Page 2]

Im don’t intend to make a messenger out of you, but just don’t see any use in writing him until I can find one.

I will write as often as I can, but from now on I’ll be busy. We, I understand, will have a test every day. Guess I’ll have to study for awhile anyway. The first part of the course will be easy, I hope, as I’ve already had it.

We visited the officers club last night. It is real nice.

Hope we will be able to be together soon

All my love
Manning.

This collection consists of letters between Manning and his wife, Elizabeth, from 1943-1945. Dearest Lib,

Well, we have been here a little over a week. It seems like about six months. This eight hour classroom work each day is sure getting me down. We just finished our last class. Can you imagine going to class until 5 o’clock on saturday. The material they are giving is very concentrated and intestive [sic]. Beleive [sic] it will be very usefull [sic] when we leave.

I’m complaining as usual today. We all received our typhoid and smallpox vaccine yesterday and there are plenty of sore arms today. I had the tetanus vaccine the day before.

I want to write about something now that has worried me a great deal. I would like for you to come up here but I feel like I would be doing you an

injustice. I say this because I can’t get off except for saturday night and sunday. Also you will be very lonesome up here: I have to go to class at eight o’clock and won’t be able to get back until around five in the afternoon. At night I’ll have to study as no fooling this course requires some studying. You see why I’ve hesitated to ask you to come up. Think that it will be best to let you decide. My financial condition isn’t so good but beleive [sic] we can get along. I want you to understand that I will be willing to wait. Also this waiting my be until the war is over. I’m afraid that I’ve not made myself clear. What I’m trying to say is that I’d wait for you, forever.

Think that if we don’t get married this month or before about six weeks we might not be able to get married before going accross [sic]. Please if you rather wait, tell me and I’ll be glad to wait. If you rather wait until I get to Camp Pickett that’ll suit me.

Hope if we do get married we’ll have some time to be together after I’ve finished up here.

I’ll wait for your answer to make any plans and they can’t be definite. Think the latter

part of the month will be the best time.

Hope you are able to go down and see my folks. Please don’t mention anything about there being any possibility of me being sent accross [sic]. There is no certainty that I’ll be sent accross [sic] but I always look at the worse outlook so I’ll never be disappointed.

Please be frank with me,

All my love,
Manning.

P.S. Sorry you didn’t get to go to the beach. I trust you and love you with all my heart.

He was stationed at various locations in the Pacific until he was killed in an explosion in the Ryukyu Islands in Japan.

This collection consists of letters between Manning and his wife, Elizabeth, from 1943-1945.

Dearest “Lib”,

Here it is the thirteenth of July and I didn’t get a letter from you. Didn’t receive one sunday but got two monday.

Think that it was a coincidence for both of us to write the same kind of letter around the same day. It showed that we were thinking around the same lines.

I have been working hard during the day (going to class is the hardest kind of work) and when I’m through during the day I’m so tired I can’t write a letter[.] Besides there is some studying that has to be done.

Was in hopes that maybe you could come up with George and Francis. Thought that you probably weren’t ready, Sure do miss you and am looking forward to to

[Page 2]

seeing you.

I’m putting in for five days leave after we finish up here. Think we finish Aug. 12. The officers up here seem to think that we’ll be able to get the leave. If you would rather wait until this time it will be alright with me. Should I come home it would take about three days there and back. Another possibility is for me to meet you about half way, say around Richmond Va. Know that your folks would rather for us to get married around home and think my folks do also. As for me I’m not, as you know, in favor of doing this, but will do what ever [sic] you want.

Received a telegram from George today, letter from home, and a letter from my aunt. Try and write every day. Your letters help me so much.

I love you

All my love
Manning

This collection consists of letters between Manning and his wife, Elizabeth, from 1943-1945.

Hope they party was nice. Sure that it was.

Well the boys from Columbia are up here now. They begin classes in the morning. Please don’t feel sorry for me about the work. It’s not as hard as I have pictured. Have gotten around now to where I’m about in the swing of it. It’s doing me good to have to work for a change.

We are having a full week beginning Tuesday. Even Monday Judy Garland is coming to the post. Guess I’ll go to see her. Tell Hazel that we’re going on that night problem this tuesday night.

[Page 2]

You know the one in which they take you out about 8 miles from camp and tell you to be at a certain place a [sic] specified time. If you aren’t there you have to walk back.

Guess how I spent my sunday? Began working on a problem we have to hand in the latter part of the week around eight thirty this morning. Worked on it continuously until 6 oclock this evening with about one hour out for eating.

I don’t mind my work so bad now. If it just wasn’t for those 7-8 hours in classes each day. Saw George and Francis in the hotel down town [sic] Saturday night. She said that she had talked with you every day lately.

Sure do miss you. I’m sincere about this and just want you to know that I trust you.

All my love,
Manning.

P.S. Please excuse as its [sic] past my bedtime. Dearest “Lib”

Well another day has gone, along with three weeks. Just three weeks to go. Finished another exam today. Didn’t do so well on it, but have done well on the others. I intended on waiting until I heard from you before writing. Didn’t receive a letter yesterday nor today. Guess there is some mix up in the mail. Usually get two letters one day and then don’t get any for two days. It sure does make me feel better to get letters and especially from you.

You inquired about my classes. Didn’t think you were interested in them. We study all of the workings of the army. There are plenty of papers to be signed for everything. Have drill, and study all sorts of military

Hope you are feeling well now. Suppose you had a nice quiet time out in the country. Think you deserve a rest. You sure have been working hard. Don’t work to [sic] hard. I think about you all of the time that I’m not under pressure. Want you to know that I’m very true to you and love you so much.

Got through with the problem without any trouble. Of course it wasn’t as bad as it was talked. Nobody got lost. We worked in pairs in a large field. Several of the boys walked around looking for their partner, from whom they had gotten lost earlier in the night.

Sure do want you up here and hope you will be able to come on the date that I mentioned in my previous letter. Think this will be a good time for us to get married. The date was Aug 7. We don’t have any exams, the last five

days up here. Think we could get married the saturday night. We will have plenty of witnesses in Sam, Sarge, George and [France] along with several others. Beleive [sic] that if we leave up there on thursday for Camp Pickett that we want [sic] have to get there until sometimes friday. Am going downtown this weekend and see about some of the particulars on getting married in Penn. You know I’ve never gotten married before.

Hoping we can get married on Aug. 7 and of course hoping to see you soon.

All my love,
Manning.

Dearest Lib,

Just received your two letters that were written on the 22nd & 23rd. They sure did to me so much good. Had just gotten back from church when I received them. Don’t you think that I’m getting good? It sure did do my heart good to know that you will come up here. I want you to come so bad as I miss you and am terribly lonesome without you.

Think that I explained everything in my letter yesterday. Beleive [sic] if you leave Columbia by train Thursday morning you will arrive in Harrisburg Pa around noon friday. It will be better to take a bus from Harrisburg to Carlisle. You will arrive here friday afternoon. I will be unable to meet you as I don’t finish out

[Page 2]

here until around 5 o clock each afternoon, but will ask Francis to meet you. By the way, you had better make reservation on the train in advance.

You should get a wassermann made by the State board of Health and bring it with you. We can get it transferred by the doctor up here and then get the license. Will see about the minister this weekend. Let me know and I’ll make reservation at the hotel for you friday night. I’ll have to go through with getting a wassermann also.

Have found out that I will finish all of my exams. the friday before. So the saturday will be the best time that we could find.

You asked about Sam and Beverely. All I can say is that he doesn’t go around with anyone up here. Hardly even hear him mention an girl except when he receives a letter.

Strangly [sic] enough I wrote Harry Mims last night concerning the tennis shoes. I can’t get his size.

Hoping to see you soon

All my love,
Manning.

He was stationed at various locations in the Pacific until he was killed in an explosion in the Ryukyu Islands in Japan.

This collection consists of letters between Manning and his wife, Elizabeth, from 1943-1945.

He was stationed at various locations in the Pacific until he was killed in an explosion in the Ryukyu Islands in Japan.

This collection consists of letters between Manning and his wife, Elizabeth, from 1943-1945.

Dearest “Lib”,

Well I have some more news. Guess you could call it bad. My orders have been changed. I’m to report to Dallas Texas. Sure is a far ways from home.

Have hesitated writing home as I hate to tell them. Don’t think it will be so bad out there. Everyone says that Dallas is a very nice place.

This will not interfer [sic] with our wedding plans unless you don’t want to go with me. I love you so much, and am hoping to see you soon.

Sam hasn’t heard yet about whether he’ll get transfered [sic] or not. Nearly everyone that was going to Camp Pickett have been transfered [sic].

All my love,
Manning
