As I left the depot I was looking out towards home I thought I might see you again as you were going home. After I had passed Mr. Baldwin’s I sat down to think over all that had passed during the four short days that I was at home. You may know who was uppermost in my thoughts. That dearest of all young Ladies to me I need not tell you her name is Mary. She sent up the blanket today, but I do not know what it cost. Then I went down to McIntosh’s to see about the cabbage seed. He said he sent a card saying there were not in stock then but would send them as soon as he got them. He said he would have them about Saturday and would send them as soon as he got them so look out accordingly. He also said he knew papa well & invited me to see him. I met Drummond yesterday too. Miss Lawrence called on me this evening and I like her nicely. Bowman is the hospital orderly which is considered better than lieutenant according to hav- [Page 3] ing a good time. Lieut. Cantey has been around twice but has said nothing. The fare is very good to what I have heard about it. There are two tables in our room covered with oilcloth. They are about two feet wide by four feet long. Six chairs, a clothes press, bookshelf & washstand make up the furniture. The clothes press is about six feet high but looks like a large desk with four large places for mattresses that correspond to the drawers while it has 8 places that look like pigeon holes. They are about 1 ½ feet square and two to each cadet for his clothes. There are two portholes in our room. [Page 4] Also pegs to hang your clothes on and that’s the crap. Mr. Burn’s foot is still hurt and Miss Mattie is going home for a visit Monday evening. I also went to see Miss Lawrence this afternoon and she was real nice to me. Sunday Night This morning we went to Westminster Presbetarian [sic] Church and Miss Lawrence sang in the choir. As to money matters which I guess you are thinking about you need not worry as I have $2.45 out of the $10 (ten dollars) you gave me. I had to get a tie ($.25) trunk (.25) collars etc., more than what I thought I would have to spend. I am receiving very good treatment. Tonight they sent for all “Rats” to go to a certain room for [Page 3] to undergo the usual initiation ceremonies. They paddled every recruit on this gallery except Henry & I. They would have beat us but Roy & Bowman told them to leave us alone as we were good “Rats” and if a recruit came they would paddle him because he had the gaul to come for their “Rats”. Last night the same order came as I was going Mr Hammette told me to go to his room and stay they would not bother me so I come out alright. But I have went through all the ceremonies but rather light and Henry the same way. We will start in lessons tomorrow. I have joined the Y.M.C.A. as I found out that the boys generally get along better. As to my hours: The first drum beats at 6.25 a.m. when we are supposed to wake up and be dressed by 6:30 a.m. also be down in the quadrangle (which I can do, an improvement eh!). The roll-call at 6:30 a.m. is called Reveille. We are dismissed and go to our rooms to put up cots, sweep out & empty slop to be ready for 7:00 a.m. inspection. At 7:15 a.m. we have to form for prayers, we have [Page 2] to have cuffs extra, shoes polished and clothes dusted. When we come from chapel we are marched into breakfast, after we are marched from breakfast we can go out on the green till 9:00 a.m. (study hall). Then I go to Capt Cantey for Montgomery’s English History until 10:00 o’clock. From 10-11 to “Cap” Coleman for Physiology, 12-1 to Maj. Mazyck for French every other day. 1-2 to Maj. Thomas for math. I have two vacant hours every other day and one vacant hour every day but they will be filled up later. The rest of the Course of Study will be taken up after Christmas. 2 o’clock is dinner, after dinner til 3 we can go out on the green. 3-4 is for study. 4-5 Drill. 5-5:45 is for amusement generally go out on the green. 5:45 - Retreat or [Page 3] pulling down flag. Then we are marched into supper till 7 o’clock inspection when we study till 9:30. 9:30 Tattoo or the last Roll-call. Then we go up and go to sleep. 10 o’clock Taps or lights out. We are marched in and out to classes and the roll is called before each class. Also before each meal. Everyone sleeps on iron cots about 3x7. They have to be put up every night and took down every morning. The mattresses have a place to be put and sheets, pillows, quilts, etc. have to be piled nicely on top of press. Nov 6, 1902 Dear Mary, I received your letter Monday and was glad to hear you all are getting on alright. I think I did not make more than 9 on Algebra the maximum 15. But I made 15 on French as I saw the Professor’s book. On History & Physioliogy [sic] I think I made a good mark. Henry will have a higher mark than me this month as he does not have to study Algebra much while I have worked two hours on it at a time but I think I will have as good an average on the rest as he has. I have seen one copy of the “Barnwell People” and about two of the “Youth’s Companion” since I have been here as for magazines there is plenty to read as boys who are restricted send out for them to read and it is an easy matter to get them. If you think best I might write Mr. Grimes about Bessie and settle the matter. Bowman writes to two or three girls but Roy has not written thus far yet but do not mention this. Jan. 26, 1903 Dear Mary, I received your timely and kind letter was received Saturday dinner. In regard to the debate it was a complete victory & success on our part. The judges unanimously decided in our favor while the President rendered his in favor of the opposite side but that was on account of my colleagues having been a second in a fight for the Presidents antagonist. The critic in his report thanked me for memorizing my debate & complimented me for my delivery. The President thanked me for the logical & complete manner in which I delivered my speech and also thanked me for waking up one of the censors. After the society the President came up to me and congratulated me on my speech saying that he never heard a better or one that even would come up to it in that hall. Said that the society was going down and that he believed that it would give a new start & impetus & that any time I wished to deliver a speech or recite before the society [Page 2] to do it that I would be received as already shown. The critic also afterwards said about the same. I started my regular debate as this: You might expect me if I had the eloquence & persuasive ability enough by flowing speech and glowing epithets to raise the character & standard of Alexander and on the other hand by Phillipical denunciations to lower that of Hannibal. I went on then to discuss the motive of the conquests etc. When I rose the second time, I said: I have not the oratorical powers of the “Silver Tongued Orator” or of the “Pitchfork Senator” or I am not able to make an impromptu speech like Robert Emmet yet I wish to vindicate the character of Alexander. All of the boys had a great opinion of me know [sic] on account of my speech. They said with my glasses I looked like a sage. I could certainly have done nothing if it were not for your points. Do not say much of this outside or in your letters to me as I think H is jealous and Bowman & Roy were not down that night. [Page 3] Thursday I went to see the Doctor he said that I had scarcely any vision at all in my right eye but with the use of glasses I might be able to better it. He sent me to Allan’s to get the glasses which cost $3.00 and I will have to pay for them by next Saturday as they were not got from the Doctor himself. I do not know what the Doctor will charge himself for the examination. With the glasses I have been able to do a great deal better. I happened to be able to buy a shoe order from an old cadet who had plenty of money on account but no cash. I got the order for $3.00. But I had to buy my suspenders so you see it was not wasted, I mean the rest of the amount I was to pay for shoes. Exams will be Thursday & Friday. Physics & French on Thursday & Math & History on Friday. There will be three courses here next year. Scientific, Literary, [Page 4] and Civil Engineering course. The earthquake was also felt here. It shoved our press out from the wall. I did not go to see Miss Saurence yesterday or Sunday before as I had to study yesterday & Sunday before I was excused church and could not go on leave. Feb. 21, 1903 Dear Mamma and Mary, I received your letters one from the Mary at Thursday dinner & one from Mamma this morning “with a check from home”. In using Mary’s words I will say it will fill up some cracks and a hungry boy. I got some tooth powder with part of it & as I have no money on my account I will get a Geometry and a Physics. So you see I make the best use of my money. I am certainly much obliged to both of you for it and also for your [Page 2] good wishes. I think we will have holiday and a dress parade Monday. I could not get all of the pictures at one store so I went to another as you will notice a difference in Washington’s & Lincoln’s and in the rest. I could not get Jefferson Davis picture as both places had sold out of them. I certainly never got a valentine and I believe the girls were just bluffing Mary. I enclose a list of Perry Pictures that I got from one of the Professors (Maj. Masyck). As for the game “Flinch” I see Backville is keeping up with times in social circles for the game has not been advertised here long. How are you getting along with the nut grass? One of the boys sitting near me at the mess cut open a sweet potato and found a nut grass nut. That made me think of [Page 3] the garden home. Do you think anything is injured by the recent cold spell? Mr. Beckwith who held meetings at the Y.M.C.A here closed Wednesday night. Tuesday night he brought Mr. Lucas up with him and it seemed so much like home to hear Mr. Lucas praying on a Tuesday night. He asked about you all. Mr. Beckwith told a good story on Mr. Lucas several days before which I will tell you all sometime. No I do not correspond with Joe or with anybody except you all. I do not even write to “her”. I came very near not getting out today as I was on guard and thrown out to drill for orderly. On Saturday the worst [Page 4] dressed member of the guard is given orderly. The adjutant could decide between three of us so he threw us three out to drill for it. In the first command one of the other two made a mistake so I came out on top or at least out drilled the other fellow. Did that storm blow down any of your fences? I thought I put up one stationery strong enough to hold. Now I want both of you to write me at at your earliest convenience and it there is anything you want me to get tell me and I will be glad to able to oblige you. Tell Annie to write soon too.
