A beautiful try it is [illegible] isn’t it? The Doctor (Moore) [illegible] just come up to see us, and has given my finger a comfortable dressing. It does not give me much pain, but I find it very inconvenient. I think it will be quite healed in about two days, as it does not seem inclined to slough much. It is to God’s merciful Providence alone I owe it that I am now alive, for we were in fearful danger. My gallant little Regiment went further than any other. I carried it up right under the enemy’s breastwork and would have mounted them if I had not discovered in time all the other troops were falling back in confusion. I had no alternative but to withdraw my men just as [Page 2] I had ordered my men to halt and lie down a bullet struck me squarely in the forehead. For an instant I thought it was all up with me, but to my intense relief I found that it had not even broken the skin. The ball had struck the ground first and then lost its force, and my thick felt hat still further deadened the blow. My finger was hit after we had fallen back about a hundred yards. The failure of the assault was caused mainly by the bad management and bad conduct of Anderson’s Georgia Brigade which threw everything into confusion. My loss was not very heavy, many of the wounds being very slight. We have had to work very hard since the fight, and have succeeded in throwing a strong line close to the enemy which we are anxious he should try to take from us. If he does attempt it he will get the soundest thrashing he has ever had. I have not received a letter from you since last Thursday [Page 3] the day we left Petersburg. July 23 1863 My darling wife Since I wrote you last we have again changed our location to the camp on the [illegible] Turnpike which we left Sunday before last. It is far pleasanter than the one we left, which was offensive in every respect. The grand Review I mentioned as being in prospect, in my last, came off on Monday in splendid style. A large crowd of ladies and gentlemen honored us with their presence, among them the President and his wife. The Brigade has created a grand sensation in Richmond - all parties, soldiers and civilians and especially the ladies, have pronounced it the very finest [Page 2] in the service. On Tuesday a party of us was invited to an entertainment at Gen. Cooper’s and I must say that with dancing and flirting with beautiful women, I really enjoyed myself. I ought not to [illegible] saying, however, that your letter of the 17th which I had just received, put me in condition to enjoy myself. Last night I had to go in to pay my respects to Miss Cary, the Baltimore belle, but I found the evening decidedly flat. No flirting last night - of course I passed off as an unmarried man. Jenkins thinks that he has a good opportunity now to retaliate on me for the previous scolding I got him on [illegible words] and threatens to write all sorts of things to you about my doings. I am not much afraid of it, however, for I [Page 3] can easily turn the tables on him, as he was decidedly fast himself. Besides I have not a Carrie for my wife. - Why we are kept here now, I can’t possibly imagine. There is no enemy anywhere near Richmond, General Lee is safe on the south side on the Potomac and Meade can’t advance this way without first disposing of him. In the meantime Charleston is battering in her ancient seat, for want of troops to sustain her and here is a splendid Brigade kept in idleness. It is well that we get up these little episodes of pleasure, otherwise disgust and dissatisfaction would prevail. I never like to question the wisdom of those in authority, especially as I have not as many and good sources of information as they, but I do chafe at being kept here [Page 4] Now when “action, action, action,” is so urgently called for. I can think of but a single danger that could arise requiring our presence and that is a raid by the enemy’s large cavalry force. If such a thing was attempted now, it would be extremely difficult to repel it, for in three days they could reach Richmond with thirty or forty thousand mounted men. I have six pounds now and if I succeed this evening in getting more, I will try to start it tomorrow by one of my men who is about to go home on furlough. You ask for my forgiveness - I have nothing to forgive, for I know, and I think, I so stated that I felt confident that what you had written was wrong, from a heart wholly devoted to me. Had you felt less anxiety, I might have felt that you loved me less. The only thing that pained me, was that you should have used the word neglect. I cannot remember distinctly what I wrote, and hot, tired and broken down as I was, I may have expressed myself too strongly - perhaps too harshly, and may be as much an object of forgiveness as you claim to be. I certainly did not intend to pain you. But enough - If I could kiss that dear mouth of yours now and take our long hug! I am sorry to tell you that Johnny has been quite sick. I did not find it out until Sunday afternoon when I received a note from him begging me to come to see him. Yesterday we had one of the hardest and bloodiest fight that this war has yet known. From early dawn until dark our whole line seemed engaged - many times the enemy was repulsed, but their numbers seemed almost infinite. However, our gallant little Army, for it is now but a handfull, regained all the ground we originally had. There has been no serious demonstration to-day. I thought when I left home that I was leaving all bad news, bad managements &c, behind; but I can no longer blind myself to the gloomy prospect before us. It seems very doubtful now whether our troops will re-enlist. Indeed every indication is decidedly unpromising. Every one seems to have some kink in his head which nothing but being “free once more” as they term it, will enable them him to gratify. I am heartsick. This will be the last blow that strikes our unfortunate State from the proud position she had assumed. Our prestige is gone, and soon all our boasting and all our resolutions will be condemned. [Page 2] If a more hopeful prospect does not arise within the coming fortnight, I shall resign my position and apply for permission to raise a Regiment for the war. I shall do so, fully aware of the immense difficulty I shall labor under. Jenkins speaks of raising a Legion, and claims, as being already pledged to him, in case the Brigade is not reorganized, most of the companies I expected to get. He is welcome to take them, for he will have to scramble for them with the officers who now command them. He wants me to join in with him; but on this point I have already told you my determination. I want to have a talk with Seabrooks. I have no doubt he knows the sentiments of the men better than Jenkins does, - I mean so far as his company is concerned. We have passed through a great struggle; Our Army has triumphed gloriously; - the enemy has been completely routed. Even newspaper accounts would fail to give an adequate idea of their loss and panic. Our Brigade participated in the great fight, though in an isolated position towards the rear left flank of the enemy, and had we been properly supported, we should have effected a brilliant stroke. As it was, our attack effected its object and completed the panic [.] [Page 2] We charged a powerful battery, in a most gallant style. Jenkins Reg’t. leading in a manner worthy of Palmettos. A masked battery opened upon the flank of the Brigade and threw the Mississippians into confusion. The fire of grape, bomb and shrapnels rained upon them, they faltered, fell back, leaving the 5th unsupported and alone. Unflinchingly they held their ground and opened fire upon a strong party of cavalry and infantry, drove them off, and after maintaining their dangerous position for half an hour they withdrew in perfect order from the field. We did not capture the battery, but we drove them from a position from which, for a whole day and night, they had poured upon our lines a most galling fire. - I was greatly delighted [Page 3] to find John yesterday morning. He had escaped miraculously - a ball grazed his temple and killed his right hand man. Law has lost and [sic] arm, I hear, and Mason received a dangerous wound in the shoulder.
