Dear Sir :
I have the honor to submit the following annual report 0£ The
Citadel, the Military College 0£ South Carolina, for the 1969-70
academic year, for transmission to the General Assembly.
The enrollment for the year ending May 30, 1970 was a.s follows:
Summer School: 1,753 men and 620 women.
The College term: 1,908 cadets and 187 veteran students.
" Te also had 122 nurses from the Medical University, 502
attended the Evening Program, and 206 were enrolled in
the Master 0£ Arts in Teaching program.
Cadets and veteran students ·who completed the courses were
graduated at the end 0£ summer school and on May 30, 1970.
The total number 0£ gradna.tes from June 1969 to June 1970 was
467.
Registration by classes 0£ cadets £or the college term was as
follow s : First class, 461; Second class, 431; Third class, 447;
and Fourth class, 569.
The numbe'l' 0£ students, cadets (897) and veteran students
(187) , from South Carolina was 1,084 or fifty-one per cent. One
thousand and eleven students were from other states and foreign
countries.
The distribution among counties in South Carolina was

The :following scholarships are maintained:
Star of the West Scholarships cover all college expenses.
Daniel Scholarships vary from $400 to all expenses.
City of Charleston supports four scholarships at $500 each per
year.
Joseph D. Aiken Scholarships pay all expenses for the first
three years. Limited to New England states with preference
given to Rhode I sland and Connecticut.
First Field Artillery Brigade and Fifth Field Artillery
Scholarships cover all expenses for four years. Limited to the
State of Illinois.
Association of Citadel Men maintains several scholarships in
the amount of $200 per year .
. Major James W. AyersScholarship has a value of $400 a year
for four years.
Bernard Baruch Scholarships have a value of $400 per year.
W. W . Benson Schola~ip pays all expenses. Limited to
Greenwood County.
Oliver J. Bond Scholarship has a value of $400 per year.
A1ton H. Bryant Scholarship of $500 a year is limited to
Orangeburg County.

_Richard P. Cardwell Scholarship is given in alternate years
to a member of the sophomore class and has a value of $400.
Cadet Insurance Aid Plan Scholarships vary from $300 to
$500.
.Carrigg Scholarships have a value of $800 a year for four
years.
Cayce Scholarships have a value of $800 a year for four years.
Mark Clark and Renie Clark Scholarships have a value of
$800 a year for four years and $1,000 for one year.
Cogswell Scholarship of the Washington Light Infantry has
a value of $1,000 a year. Limited to sons of the W.L.I.
Crouch-Lee Scholarship has a value of $400 a year for four
years.
Thomas Holland Evans Memorial Scholarship pays $400 a
year for four years.
Exchange Club of Charleston. $1,000 a year to a resident of
the Charleston area.
Greenville-Piedmont Citadel Club Scholarship pays $300 a
year. Limited to the Greenville area.
B. Calhoun Hipp Scholarship has a v,a lue of $500 per year and
is awarded annually to a young man from the Greenville area.
Toney B. Jackson Scholarship, given in alternate years to a
member of the sophomore class. Has a value of $400.
Thomas Jefferson Political Science Scholarship. This award
given by the National Society of Southern Dames has a value of
$300 and is awarded annually to an outstanding senior majoring
in political science.
Peter P. Leventis, Sr. Scholarship has a value of $1,000 a year
for four years~
Freddie Levine Scholarship pays $500 a year for four years.
Broadus R. Littlejohn Scholarship has a value of $500 a year
for four years.
Orphanage Fund Scholarships pay all expenses.
McCrackan Scholarship pays $250 a year for four years.
General Harry K. Pickett Scholarships pay $800 a year for
four years. Limited to South Carolina residents or sons of
United States Marines.
President's Honorary Scholarships pay $200 a year.
Captain Anthony G. Prior Scholarship pays $400 a year for
four years.
South Carolina Electric and Gas Scholarship pays $500 a year.
Limited to specified counties in South Carolina.

Summerall Scholarship pays $800 a year for four years.
Edgar A. Terrell Scholarship pays $800 a year for four years.
Limited to Mecklenburg County, North Carolina.
Vandiver-Sullivan Scholarship pays $500 a year. Limited to
Anderson County.
West End Dairy Scholarship pays $200 a year. Limited to
specified South Carolina counties.
Western Electric Scholarship pays approximately $800 each
year.
Westmoreland Scholarships pays $400 a year £or four years.
W. Steve Weston, Class 0£ 1938 Leadership Foundation Scholarship pays all expenses £or £our years. Limited to South Carolina residents.
Judge C. C. Wyche Scholarships pay $200. Limited to South
Carolina residents.

Sixty had a doctor's degree; eighty-five had a master's degree;
and seven had a bachelor's degree.
In addition to the academic sta££, there were twenty-two officers 0£ the Army and Air Force detailed for ROTC duty who
instructed courses in these two services.

The college has operated on a twelve-months' program 0£ two
semesters and two sessions 0£ summer school.

                  <text>&lt;p class="p1"&gt;&lt;span class="s1"&gt;The oldest known Citadel Class Ring dates to 1895, and features a dark stone with the year '95 inscribed in the center. Early rings changed design from year to year until the design was standardized in 1940. A special war ring was made for those who had been called to active duty directly from The Citadel at the close of the 1942-1943 academic year. This war ring was unique in that it did not have class numerals.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p class="p1"&gt;&lt;span class="s1"&gt;Citadel Class Rings for the Corps of Cadets feature an oval crest with a Palmetto tree and the South Carolina State Seal with the graduating class numerals. The words “The Military College of S.C. 1842” wrap around the oval. The right side of the ring depicts the United States and South Carolina flags, cannon balls, and a star representing the Star of the West steamship that cadets fired upon in January of 1861. The left side depicts a crossed sword and rifle with oak leaves and laurel wreath.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

                <text>&lt;p class="p1"&gt;&lt;span class="s1"&gt;The oldest known Citadel Class Ring dates to 1895, and features a dark stone with the year '95 inscribed in the center. Early rings changed design from year to year until the design was standardized in 1940. A special war ring was made for those who had been called to active duty directly from The Citadel at the close of the 1942-1943 academic year. This war ring was unique in that it did not have class numerals.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;
&lt;p class="p1"&gt;&lt;span class="s1"&gt;Citadel Class Rings for the Corps of Cadets feature an oval crest with a Palmetto tree and the South Carolina State Seal with the graduating class numerals. The words “The Military College of S.C. 1842” wrap around the oval. The right side of the ring depicts the United States and South Carolina flags, cannon balls, and a star representing the Star of the West steamship that cadets fired upon in January of 1861. The left side depicts a crossed sword and rifle with oak leaves and laurel wreath.&lt;/span&gt;&lt;/p&gt;

He was also a president of the Ranger-Airborne Club, a member of the Junior Sword Drill, and a member of the International Relations Club.&#13;

On July 7, 1970 Robert Woodhouse was killed in a mortar attack during a landing operation. He had been in Vietnam for eleven months, and had attained the rank of Captain. </text>
