He was stationed at various locations in the Pacific until he was killed in an explosion in the Ryukyu Islands in Japan.

This collection consists of letters between Manning and his wife, Elizabeth, from 1943-1945. The letters from 1943-March 1945 are all from Manning to Elizabeth while the letters from March 1945-May 1945 are all from Elizabeth to Manning. These letters were sent to Manning after his death and as a result, were returned to Elizabeth. They came to The Citadel Archives still sealed, having never been opened and read.</text>

Dearest “Lib,”

Received five v mail letters today and three of them were from you. Suppose the above address is alright as it was the way you had it on your letter.

Know that you will get on to everything out there. I’ve always hated a new kind of work but after you get in it there isn’t very much to it. Suppose it will take a little time to get accustomed to everything.

Went to see a very lousy show tonight. The title was “Tall in the Saddle.” The sound wasn’t very good so that might have had something to do with it. Regards to the Richardsons.

Love always,
