[Page 1]

Chafins Farm Oct 4th 1862

My darling wife

As everything seems quiet now except the occasional picket shot that whistles over our breastworks I have determined to try my game [illegible] at writing. A beautiful try it is [illegible] isn’t it? The Doctor (Moore) [illegible] just come up to see us, and has given my finger a comfortable dressing. It does not give me much pain, but I find it very inconvenient. I think it will be quite healed in about two days, as it does not seem inclined to slough much. It is to God’s merciful Providence alone I owe it that I am now alive, for we were in fearful danger. My gallant little Regiment went further than any other. I carried it up right under the enemy’s breastwork and would have mounted them if I had not discovered in time all the other troops were falling back in confusion. I had no alternative but to withdraw my men just as

[Page 2]

I had ordered my men to halt and lie down a bullet struck me squarely in the forehead. For an instant I thought it was all up with me, but to my intense relief I found that it had not even broken the skin. The ball had struck the ground first and then lost its force, and my thick felt hat still further deadened the blow. My finger was hit after we had fallen back about a hundred yards. The failure of the assault was caused mainly by the bad management and bad conduct of Anderson’s Georgia Brigade which threw everything into confusion. My loss was not very heavy, many of the wounds being very slight. We have had to work very hard since the fight, and have succeeded in throwing a strong line close to the enemy which we are anxious he should try to take from us. If he does attempt it he will get the soundest thrashing he has ever had.

I have not received a letter from you since last Thursday

[Page 3]

the day we left Petersburg. I suppose it is the fault of the mail. I got my Quincy to send you a dispatch on Friday, and James wrote you a letter yesterday, both of which I hope you have received.

I must now bid you good bye. My hand is becoming cramped. You have no idea how awkwardly I have to hold my pen. God bless and keep you all. Kiss Jennie and give love to all.

Your devoted husband
A Coward

[Page 1]

H’d Qrs. 5th Ret. S.C.V.
July 23 1863

My darling wife

Since I wrote you last we have again changed our location to the camp on the [illegible] Turnpike which we left Sunday before last. It is far pleasanter than the one we left, which was offensive in every respect. The grand Review I mentioned as being in prospect, in my last, came off on Monday in splendid style. A large crowd of ladies and gentlemen honored us with their presence, among them the President and his wife. The Brigade has created a grand sensation in Richmond - all parties, soldiers and civilians and especially the ladies, have pronounced it the very finest

[Page 2]

in the service. On Tuesday a party of us was invited to an entertainment at Gen. Cooper’s and I must say that with dancing and flirting with beautiful women, I really enjoyed myself. I ought not to [illegible] saying, however, that your letter of the 17th which I had just received, put me in condition to enjoy myself. Last night I had to go in to pay my respects to Miss Cary, the Baltimore belle, but I found the evening decidedly flat. No flirting last night - of course I passed off as an unmarried man. Jenkins thinks that he has a good opportunity now to retaliate on me for the previous scolding I got him on [illegible words] and threatens to write all sorts of things to you about my doings. I am not much afraid of it, however, for I

[Page 3]

can easily turn the tables on him, as he was decidedly fast himself. Besides I have not a Carrie for my wife. - Why we are kept here now, I can’t possibly imagine. There is no enemy anywhere near Richmond, General Lee is safe on the south side on the Potomac and Meade can’t advance this way without first disposing of him. In the meantime Charleston is battering in her ancient seat, for want of troops to sustain her and here is a splendid Brigade kept in idleness. It is well that we get up these little episodes of pleasure, otherwise disgust and dissatisfaction would prevail. I never like to question the wisdom of those in authority, especially as I have not as many and good sources of information as they, but I do chafe at being kept here

[Page 4]

Now when “action, action, action,” is so urgently called for. I can think of but a single danger that could arise requiring our presence and that is a raid by the enemy’s large cavalry force. If such a thing was attempted now, it would be extremely difficult to repel it, for in three days they could reach Richmond with thirty or forty thousand mounted men. It may be this this keeps us here. I am trying to gather up a little sugar to send you. I have six pounds now and if I succeed this evening in getting more, I will try to start it tomorrow by one of my men who is about to go home on furlough. I can’t bear the thought of the darling babies suffering, Bless their little souls. If we stay here much longer could you not pay me a visit? I am more than love sick, I am ravenous. Good bye God bless you

Yr devoted husband
A. Coward

Near Richmond July 22 1863
My dearest wife
I received your letter of the 15th inst. this morning. I read it with much emotion. You ask for my forgiveness - I have nothing to forgive, for I know, and I think, I so stated that I felt confident that what you had written was wrong, from a heart wholly devoted to me. Had you felt less anxiety, I might have felt that you loved me less. The only thing that pained me, was that you should have used the word neglect. I cannot remember distinctly what I wrote, and hot, tired and broken down as I was, I may have expressed myself too strongly - perhaps too harshly, and may be as much an object of forgiveness as you claim to be. I certainly did not intend to pain you. But enough - If I could kiss that dear mouth of yours now and take our long hug!
I am sorry to tell you that Johnny has been quite sick. I did not find it out until Sunday afternoon when I received a note from him begging me to come to see him. I found him in the field hospital, suffering from diarrhea which had been upon him
[Page 2]
for some three weeks or more. He had attempted to keep up too long. I found him exceedingly feeble and emaciated. Not being able to get back to H’d Qrs. until after 10 o’c at night, I did not write until yesterday to your mother about him. I sent Charles to wait on him yesterday - he returned last night with a note from John stating that he felt much better. I sent Charles again to-day with a note to the Doctor requesting the privilege of bringing John here. Charles has returned saying that he is much better, and with a note from the Doctor stating that he would be glad to have me bring him there, where I can have him properly nursed and dieted. Our Div Surgeon, who messes with us will look after him so I will go for him tomorrow morning. Charles told me last night that he had received his clothes from home. I had told him to look to that and to see if he needed any clothes washed. I send enclosed the note he sent by Charles ([illegible]).
I had intended to finish this letter and to send it to Richmond last, but the General interrupted me, and kept me with him on business till late in the night. It is now near dark, I have just now an opportunity to write again. John got here about 2 o'clock, looking and feeling much better than when I saw him on Sunday? He is now in my tent, reading
[Page 3]
newspapers, and the Vale of Cedars. If he is as well tomorrow, I will make him write to your mother.
I am very sorry to learn, through your letter of the 19th which came to hand to-day, that Jennie is again unwell, with a bad cold. You must have exposed her little legs too soon by cutting off her frocks. - I trust your next letter will state that she is quite hearty again.
Tell Heloise I have not yet seen poor Burns - Poor fellow - “I smell a mice” - I wonder if he does too. Tell her I shall imagine that she is engaged, if she does not sit right down, and tell me all about that recent visit.
Good bye - God bless you all.
Your affectionate husband
A. Coward

[Page 1]

Feby 14 1863

My dear Elise

I should indeed like to see you “shuffling” about the house in my shoes; doubtless you shuffle because they pinch your feet. What will you come to next? In my shoes now, it will not be long before you usurp my breeches - eh? Don’t you flatter yourself, however, that I shall tamely submit when I get back home. If resistance does not suffice, your own Constitution allows the “Rightful Remedy”. So be forewarned - What has got into you that you are calling that dear little toad bad. Is it that you are preparing yourself for a prospective division of affection? I must protest in her name against any such arrangement. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. She must rule supreme until the evil day comes, whereon she is to have her little dumpy nose broken. She shall be just as imperious and exacting as she pleases until that time; - then she will have to content herself with one half of the dominion. Poor little thing! I ought to be at home to protect her, for I very

[Page 2]

much fear that her charge for justice is diminishing daily. Tell her not to say “pa” when she sings “passing away”; - the connection of the words brings up unpleasant suggestions. I see you still seem to think that a man is a free agent in all things in the Army, and that nothing more is necessary to procure a leave of absence than the desire to have one. Do you not know that, with the exception of Law and Jenkins, those who are getting leaves at this time are men who have not been home for nearly two years; and that their present leaves were promised to them twelve months ago? Law and Jenkins have gone off to get recruits and conscripts for their Brigades, I have no such excuse. J. L. Miller is at home, - sick I suppose. I am in perfect health, and how can I have the face to ask for a leave to visit my family when there are hundreds around me who have not seen theirs for twelve and even twenty-four months! Again, although I have been in six or seven pitched battles and innumerable skirmishes as a staff officer, I have never yet lead my Regiment into one. Should anything of the kind occur while I was absent, I should feel disgraced. The appearance of affairs here are by no

[Page 3]

Means such as to indicate an absence of all prospects of a battle. You must remember, too, that I have been very much indulged in getting home; more so than any of my acquaintances. You may rest assured, my darling, that nothing in the world would make me forego the privilege of a leave of absence when I can with propriety obtain it. You would not yourself have it otherwise.

I spent quite a pleasant evening yesterday. My old friend Major Moses asked me to come over to visit the family with whom he and General and Mrs. Longstreet are staying, and to assist him in taking the ladies to the “Camp Varieties of Jenkins’ Brigade”. I went over, but only Mr., Mrs. and Miss [illegible] would go. Mrs. Longstreet is in mourning and I suppose did not like to leave the General. The ladies seemed to enjoy the performance very much. There were other ladies there whom I did know. The performance over, I went back with the party, and had a very pleasant chat of about half an hour, and took my leave with a promise to call again. They are very nice, intelligent and apparently wealthy people.

Feby 15th Well! Well! I had written this far last night, when I was called off. This morning I was

[Page 4]

waked up about 7 oclock, and in the music of the pattering rain, received the intelligence that we were ordered to be on the march for Richmond by 11 oclock. Our Brigade is ordered to rejoin Gen. Picketts Div - which had been ordered south somewhere. I suspect North Carolins is our destination, or possibly, the Petersburg Department. I know Jenkins won’t relish this much.

Ugh! it makes me shudder to think of plodding all day in the rain, and sleeping all night in a puddle. Sitting in my warm comfortable tent, I cannot realize that such a hardship awaits us.

Well I must be packing up. Good bye - God bless you all. Don’t be disappointed if you do not hear from me for several days. It will take four at least to reach Richmond.

Your devoted husband
A. Coward

It has been raining heavily for two nights and a day and I had flattered myself that the campaign of the Rappahannock was over. Ah, here comes a letter from you. What a treat! You are well and the little toad is well and frisky. I think I see her now propped up in the corner. Does she sit at table, - I judge so, from what you say about her requiring Ellen to sit beside her. This is a new accomplishment, or you forgot to inform me of it sooner. Can’t you get her likeness taken again for me? I am more and more provoked every time I think of the loss of the little one first taken. You forgot to tell me how many teeth she has. It seems so long since I saw her, that I can scarcely believe that it lacks two days

[Page 2]

yet to fill up her first year. Tell her if nothing happens I will drink her health on her birthday provided I find something to drink. She may give a birthday party if she chooses, - making use of the large bottle of champagne in the closet. But what now - since I am writing - she will be one year old before this letter leaves the confines of Virginia. - Col. Jackson, my predecessor is on a visit to my camp, and leaves for home tomorrow, so I will send this by him and will also send enclosed a hundred dollars, if my quarter master has enough on hands to fill my pay account. I am sorry to learn that you have lost money in the house, for I had believed the servants honest. You must be more guarded in future. There is nothing more detestable than a dishonest pilfering thief about ones house. It is bad enough to have to follow the servants up in their work, to have to watch their honesty at the same time is unendurable. Whom do you suspect? You never mention [illegible] Mary is she still with you? Love to all - Kiss baby

Yr. devoted husband
A. Coward

[Page 1]

Sharpsburg M’d.
Sept 18. 1862

My darling wife

As I have at last a possible chance of getting a letter to the rear, that is to somewhere South of the Potomac, I write to say that God’s mercy has not yet been withdrawn from me. Yesterday we had one of the hardest and bloodiest fight that this war has yet known. From early dawn until dark our whole line seemed engaged - many times the enemy was repulsed, but their numbers seemed almost infinite. However, our gallant little Army, for it is now but a handfull, regained all the ground we originally had. There has been no serious demonstration to-day. On the front of our own Division the [illegible] fire has been continuous and severe, but there is as yet no indication of an advance on the part of the enemy. Yesterday the butt end of a shell which exploded just in front of my horse, struck me on the bridle hand and pit of the stomach, bringing me off my horse. In a few moments, however, and before the ambulance Corps of the Regiment I was

[Page 2]

leading could get hold of me, I recovered my breath sufficiently to carry the Regiment to its position. My thumb is much swollen and very sore, but the pain has entirely left my ribs and stomach; so that I am by no means [illegible] combat. All the rest of the staff escaped [illegible] Tell Jenkin’s his Brigade did very well, though of course nothing like what it would have done had be been there to command it.

Well, that is all I have time to say about the fight or say about anything else. We are in a pretty tight place, but we trust in God.

Your devoted husband
A Coward

[Page 1]

July 28th 1862

My dear wife

Your letter of the 23rd is received. You may be sure that the information it contained relieved me of a very great weight of anxiety on your and the baby’s account. I hope Charlotte will improve rapidly and that sickness will soon disappear from the yard. - I suppose Jenkins has reached home by this time, indeed he must have done so immediately after you wrote your letter, for he started a week ago, with all his honors thick upon him. By-the-by, on coming into my office yesterday afternoon, I found an official envelope lying on my desk in which I found a Major’s commission addressed to me. The General applied for my promotion after my the last battle. The commission bears date July 11th - the day the application was sent up; and henceforth , I rise truly, - and you must take due notice of my altered rank and govern yourself accordingly. - John is still improving

[Page 2]

in strength and looks, and will be fit for duty very soon. He has often told me of Burn’s kindness to him. - Seabrook is very much mistaken about my getting a furlough - the matter does not rest with General Longstreet - No one but Gen Lee can grant such a leave, and his orders are of the most positive nature. At present I see no alternative, but for you to pay me a visit when Jenkins returns, if he brings his wife with him. - The enemy is again giving signs of motion, and our whole Division has been moved down towards him. The General being still on court martial has not gone, but will probably do so tonight or tomorrow morning. In that case our mail communications will be again interrupted. I am truly sorry that you could not have Jennies likeness taken for me; but I commend your prudence. Kiss the little toad a thousand times.

Your devoted husband
A Coward

[Page 1]

Centreville Va. Dec. 26th 1861

My darling wife

I have taken out this sheet to write to you; but I am really afraid to proceed lest I give you the “blues”. I thought when I left home that I was leaving all bad news, bad managements &c, behind; but I can no longer blind myself to the gloomy prospect before us. It seems very doubtful now whether our troops will re-enlist. Indeed every indication is decidedly unpromising. Every one seems to have some kink in his head which nothing but being “free once more” as they term it, will enable them him to gratify. I am heartsick. This will be the last blow that strikes our unfortunate State from the proud position she had assumed. Our prestige is gone, and soon all our boasting and all our resolutions will be condemned.

[Page 2]

If a more hopeful prospect does not arise within the coming fortnight, I shall resign my position and apply for permission to raise a Regiment for the war. I shall do so, fully aware of the immense difficulty I shall labor under. Jenkins speaks of raising a Legion, and claims, as being already pledged to him, in case the Brigade is not reorganized, most of the companies I expected to get. He is welcome to take them, for he will have to scramble for them with the officers who now command them. He wants me to join in with him; but on this point I have already told you my determination. I want to have a talk with Seabrooks. I have no doubt he knows the sentiments of the men better than Jenkins does, - I mean so far as his company is concerned.

[Page 3]

In my last letter I neglected to tell you that James had gone off sick the morning before I arrived here. He is now at Charlottesville Va - but I don’t think there is much the matter with him. He was sick only one day before he went. I left my measure for a coat in Richmond, and I am anxious to hear from Heine; for I want a coat badly. If I do not hear from your father by the end of the week, I shall order the coat in Richmond. - We had a fine day yesterday but a very dull Christmas.

I sincerely trust I shall be able to make my next letter a more hopeful and interesting one.

God bless and keep you

Your devoted husband
A.
