Description

Bernard Warshaw, Citadel Class of 1942, was assigned to the 433rd automatic weapons battalion, an anti-aircraft unit. He served in campaigns in North Africa, Sicily, Italy, Anzio Beach, France, Germany, and in the Battle of the Bulge. Mr. Warshaw was present at the capture of the Dachau, Germany concentration camp.

After the war, Mr. Warshaw partnered with his father at Warshaw’s and Son, a clothing store in Walterboro, South Carolina. He was appointed to the South Carolina State Development Board in 1959, and served until 1966. He was then appointed to the South Carolina Mental Health Commission in 1967, and served in that position for over 20 years.

Mr. Warshaw served in numerous capacities for over fifty years, including the Colleton County Literary Council, Hope Lodge of the American Cancer Society, the Jewish Historical Society of South Carolina, and the Pineland District of the Boy Scouts of America.

In 1973 Mr. Warshaw was awarded the Order of the Palmetto, South Carolina’s highest civilian honor. In 1998 Colleton County named its health and human services building the Bernard Warshaw Complex. In 1999 he was awarded the Silver Crescent, the state’s top award for community service. He received an honorary degree from The Citadel in 2001.

This collection includes material from Warshaw's Citadel cadet years, World War II service, and professional career.
