Description

The first Citadel etiquette guide was published in 1932 and continued through the 1960s. A final later edition was published in 1994. These guides cover topics such as social customs, greetings, dining, personal appearance and dress and hops.

From the Foreward of the 1939 edition:

"The first pamphlet on the subject of Customs and Courtesies to be issued by The Citadel was prepared by Colonel John W. Lang, then Professor of Military Science and Tactics, and appeared in 1932.

The need for such a text was immediately apparent, and it met with instant success. Inquiries and requests for it are still received from former cadets, Reserve Officers Training Corps instructors, schools, and others interested in the subject. A second issue, with identical text, was brought out in 1935.

These texts were based largely on a pamphlet prepared by the Department of Tactics of the United States Military Academy, permission to use which was granted to The Citadel authorities by the Superintendent of the Military Academy."
