Description

Held in Charleston, South Carolina from December 1, 1901 to June 20, 1902, The South Carolina Inter-State and West Indian Exposition, also known as the Charleston Exposition or the West Indian Exposition, was created to improve trade efforts with Latin America and the Caribbean.

Despite notable events and then-President Theodore Roosevelt's visit to the exposition in April 1902, the South Carolina Inter-State and West Indian Exposition was a financial failure, with only 674,086 attending.

The City of Charleston created its Hampton Park site after the exposition ended, on what was the exposition's eastern grounds. The exposition's bandstand still remains within Hampton Park, although it was moved from its original position. The State of South Carolina acquired the western part of the former exposition site, which served as the new Citadel campus when it relocated there in 1922.

This collection is comprised of official items from the exposition, including a Presidential schedule book, exposition tickets, and photographs.
